ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an organised, marketing-savvy person to help us raise the profile of West Sussex Music and the West Sussex Music Education Hub; advocate for the value and impact of music; and sell our services. This is a rewarding role, where you’ll be helping us to enable more, and a wider range of, young people to experience the life-changing benefits of music.

You will need to have good all round experience in marketing and communications, be able to organise your time and work to deadlines, as well as good IT and digital skills. If you intend to work from home, you will need access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.

The Communications & Marketing Officer will plan and deliver communications to key stakeholders such as schools, partners, parents and young people and funders, working closely with members of the team, on behalf of West Sussex Music, and West Sussex Music Education Hub. They will write, edit, co-ordinate and publish content across various channels, including the website, social media, and print and online marketing materials. They will also plan and implement communications and marketing campaigns.

You will need to have a positive attitude to equality, diversity and inclusion and be a team player, enthusiastic about working with a range of stakeholders and staff. You’ll support your colleagues to grow their understanding and involvement in communications and the needs of a range of different audiences.

The role is full-time, although we will consider flexible/part-time working (e.g. 4 days a week) for the right candidate. The role is based in the West Sussex Music office at The College of Richard Collyer, Horsham RH12 2EJ, with the need to work on occasion at other WSM venues.

Salary: £25-28k depending on experience

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge and Experience
Knowledge and experience of planning and delivering marketing and communications activities, ideally but not necessarily, in a music/arts organisation or charity
Experience of copywriting (writing for a purpose in marketing, sales, fundraising, advocacy) and writing for the web/digital copywriting
Experience of WordPress or similar website content management system
Experience of using social media channels professionally
Experience of planning ahead and working to deadlines
Knowledge of Google Analytics, Google Data Studio, and social media analytics tools
Experience of securing local media coverage and identifying news or advocacy stories
Qualifications and training
Professional training in marketing and communications – either through sector organisations (Charity Comms, Arts Marketing Association, or equivalent); or hold a professional qualification in marketing or communications (eg CIM, CIPR)
Skills and Abilities
Clear and appealing writing skills, and the ability to adapt tone of voice to different audiences
Ability to design communication materials such as leaflets, social media content
Ability to use a range of digital communications and marketing tools such as Canva (design), WordPress (web), MailChimp (enews) and Google (admin and collaboration)
Ability to plan and deliver communications activities and campaigns to achieve results
Ability to work strategically, aligning communications with organisational goals and strategies
An analytical, results-focused approach, with the ability to test and adapt, and monitor communications activities and campaigns
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, including to take a brief and brief others, and work alongside team members to encourage them to get involved in communications (eg as content creators or champions/advocates)
Ability to communicate in an accessible and inclusive way, with people from a range of backgrounds

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy

Making sure that all comms and content is in keeping with the communications and fundraising strategies and business/organisational goals. Updating and adapting the comms strategy so it remains live and relevant.

 

Sales & marketing

Working with the team to increase the number of young people, parents, and schools engaging with, participating in, or buying services.

 

Communications planning and project management

Planning, arranging and organising communications content and campaigns, both for sales and for fundraising/advocacy

 

Branding

Act as ‘brand guardian’ to ensure consistency of brand, messaging and tone of voice across all internal and external communications and media and ensure we powerfully tell the story of West Sussex Music, with our stakeholders – eg young people, parents, schools – always at the heart of what we do

 

Developing content

This could involve writing and editing, designing (posters, social media posts), multi-media editing (photos, videos, audio), taking a brief from team members and briefing others (eg graphic designer, videographer, staff team members)

Throughout, ensuring a consistent and accessible brand, style and tone of voice

 

Monitoring and reporting on communications results

Monitoring, analysing and reporting on communications and marketing effectiveness, adopting a ‘test and learn’ approach, using Google Analytics, Google Data Studio, and social media analytics tools

 

Tactical comms

Publishing blogs/videos on the West Sussex Music website (WordPress)
Creating engaging posts (text and image/video) for social media, understanding social media best practice (understanding how to get best attention/engagement)

Creating e-newsletters (we currently use MailChimp), understanding email marketing best practice

 

Other
To undertake any other duties as required and be responsive to changing needs depending on the skills and abilities of our team.
