Horsham-based charity, Music for All’s eighth annual Learn to Play Day is taking place in March and West Sussex Music will be opening the doors to its Horsham Music Centre on Saturday 23rd to inspire new musicians and give children the chance to get a taste of some of the wide-ranging musical activities that it has to offer.
Visitors to Horsham Music Centre at the College of Richard Collyer will be able to enjoy informal performances by West Sussex Music’s young musicians, as well as those from the County Ensembles which include West Sussex Youth Orchestra, West Sussex Youth Wind Orchestra and West Sussex Youth Big Band. In the afternoon, the County players will also be performing solos to showcase individual instruments and there will be taster sessions, where young visitors can try their hand at orchestral instruments including brass, strings and woodwind. Keen young vocalists will also have the opportunity to take part in a choir workshop led by Musical Director Sarah Forbes.
“We are delighted to be opening the doors to our Horsham Music Centre for this, the eighth national Learn to Play Day.” Said West Sussex Music Chief Executive, James Underwood. “At West Sussex Music we know that making music can really change lives and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to come together to sing or play an instrument. I know that this belief is shared by our friends at Music for All and we are delighted to help them by supporting this worthwhile initiative.”
Since being launched eight years ago, the Learn to Play Day initiative has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument. “Our Learn to Play Day events are all about spreading the joy of playing a musical instrument and inspiring those of all ages to take up something that will not only have health benefits for the future, but that also brings so many people together.” Said Paul McManus, CEO at Music for All.
Every week during term time, Horsham Music Centre has much to offer young musicians. Children can enjoy a whole range of musical activities including bands, choirs, orchestras as well as lessons and aural and theory classes. The West Sussex Music Centres not only bring children together through a shared love of music but also offer a clear progression route through the Music Centres, on to the West Sussex Youth Orchestras and Choirs and beyond that to Junior Conservatoires and national ensembles. So, whatever the choice of instrument, level of competence or age, there is a suitable ensemble or band to be found; whether it’s a percussion ensemble, string orchestra, wind band, choir or guitar group. There are also classes in musicianship as well as beginner instrumental classes and groups for pre-school children.
