1Term2Learn is a new one term whole-class ensemble teaching programme that aims to inspire children to take up a musical instrument. Working in partnership with schools, West Sussex Music has responded to feedback to create an alternative option to our whole year Key2Music programme.
The 2012 National Plan for Music Education requires music hubs to:

“Ensure that every child aged 5 – 18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument….through whole-class ensemble teaching programmes, for a minimum of a term of weekly tuition on the same instrument.”

1Term2Learn therefore currently benefits from national funding from the Department for Education to make this programme excellent value for money.

1Term2Learn may be purchased by Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 schools. Teachers follow a standard West Sussex Music ten-week scheme of work which can work in tandem with the National Curriculum.
1Term2Learn maximises our national funding, providing even more children with access to high quality music education. Pupils will learn to play a musical instrument with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression, using and understanding musical notations.

The final session is designed to be a performance to families, celebrating the pupils’ achievements and promoting progression routes to continuing instrumental learning.

Service Features

  • The programme provides schools with 10 weekly taught sessions during term time and includes the provision of instruments.
  • Pupils’ achievements are celebrated by an end of term performance
  • Lessons are led by a specialist professional teacher from West Sussex Music and supported by the class teacher.

Children Playing Instruments

“All our KS2 children learn musical instruments throughout the autumn term, using the 1Term2Learn programme, which allows us to offer a different instrument each year. We are delighted that we have increased the take up of peripatetic lessons and we are hoping to build this further as we offer this to children eligible for Pupil Premium funding. Feedback from parents and children has been extremely positive.”

Gill Moss, Headteacher, West Dean CE Primary School - January 2016

“We ran our 1Term2Learn clarinet lessons as an 'after school club' which meant we had children from year 3 up to year 6 learning together. After a few weeks the children had learnt up to five notes and had a small repertoire of pieces they could play along with excellent backing tracks. The parents were very impressed with the informal concert the children gave on the final session. It was a brilliant way to give a lot of children a quality, vibrant musical experience that they might not otherwise have had, and I would thoroughly recommend it.”

Lynda Buckham, Music Coordinator, West Park Primary School - January 2016
