West Sussex Sings Live!
Young people across West Sussex have had the opportunity to sing their hearts out as part of an exciting initiative to champion choral singing in schools.
West Sussex Music, along with one of their partners, The Sixteen, visited Bishop Luffa School, Chichester, Durrington High School, Worthing and Ifield Community College, Crawley who each welcomed neighbouring schools to join them. In total 12 schools and 300 students have participated in the three massed singing workshops.
Olivia Tait or Charlie Perry from professional singing group The Sixteen, led the workshops for secondary school singers as part of West Sussex Music’s new season of the Sings Live! programme.
Sings Live! aims to inspire young people to get involved with choral singing and to build their confidence through inspiring opportunities to perform as part of a larger choir early next year. This month’s workshops have kicked off the project which aims to support choral singing in schools, to provide training to schoolteachers, thought inspiring workshops and school visits and which culminates in public performances in the spring term.
Alison Sutton, Assistant Head at West Sussex Music, said:
“We’re very proud of all the schools that have joined our October workshops. We fervently believe that singing lies at the heart of inclusive participation in music in schools and by supporting schools to run their own choirs gives more young people the opportunity to access the life-changing benefits of music. We’re indebted to our partners The Sixteen and their wonderful singing leaders. Not only have schools had the chance to learn and gain confidence from a professional musician and conductor, but later in the year will have the chance to perform in a stunning venue and perform in front of an audience.”
