Skills & experience

Rachel is West Sussex Music’s as Schools Singing Leader, bringing together young people across the county through all-inclusive singing programmes and supporting teachers in classroom music delivery.

Rachel Maby is a lyric mezzo-soprano and animateur. She has more than a decade of experience delivering music outreach programmes in multiple community settings, from schools to refugee centres. She has worked on behalf of The Sixteen, Welsh National Opera, Guildhall Young Artists, Spitalfields Music, Orchestra of St John’s, Oxford Bach Choir, Constella OperaBallet, Baseless Fabric Theatre, Haringey Shed and Highbury Opera Theatre. 

She has dedicated much of her work to youth music education and has conducted youth choirs on behalf of Music Education Islington,  Music in Secondary Schools Trust, Oxford and Cambridge Singing School, Jericho Youth Choir, Chant Productions, HMDT Music and Highbury Youth Choir. She is particularly experienced coaching young people for staged music-drama productions and has directed youth productions on behalf of Welsh National Opera, Highbury Opera Theatre and Haringey Shed. 

She has arranged multiple choral works for singers, for both youth and adult choirs, with particular highlights including a condensed arrangement of Zadok the Priest by Handel for Music in Secondary School’s Trust 10th anniversary concert at Theatre Drury Lane in 2023, Songs of the Spirit jazz choral work by Scott Stroman for London Jazz Choir, High Holborn Chamber Choir and Jericho Youth Choir in 2022 and Jazz Carols at Methodist Central Hall with London Jazz Choir, broadcast on Christian Premier Radio in 2021.

Rachel is a choral practitioner for Voices Foundation, training teachers in classroom music delivery with a focus on singing and musicianship. She has previously offered music leadership training programmes for both teachers and graduate music students on behalf of Music Education Islington, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Welsh National Opera, Music in Secondary School’s Trust, Constella OperaBallet and Jericho Youth Choir.
