Working with Schools

West Sussex Music is delighted to offer support in developing and enhancing the provision of music in schools.

There are many ways in which we can do this. Our range of opportunities can be tailored to suit the individual needs of your school and locality. We can help build projects and create opportunities that enrich your whole school community.

We understand that every school is unique, so if you do not find what you are looking for please contact Alison Sutton for a more detailed discussion about bespoke provision that will best support progessive music education in your school.

Individual Support for Subject Leaders/Class Teachers

West Sussex Music offers a programme of support which aims to strengthen the teaching and learning of music in the classroom. This is provided by experienced music curriculum teachers.

Strengthening Confidence of all Staff in the Teaching and Learning of Music

INSET sessions can be arranged for individual schools or clusters of schools. These can be designed as half-day or whole-day sessions, or can take place through staff meetings.

Examples include:

  • Singing throughout the school day
  • Song as a springboard for composition
  • Creative use of percussion instruments, tuned and untuned
  • Composing, performing and recording
  • Rhythm and pulse games
  • Engaging pupils through music
  • Music matters – cross-curricular links
  • Improved music subject knowledge.

INSET sessions are provided at an hourly rate. Contact us for more information.

Strengthening Whole School Provision

We can work with subject leaders on:

  • Building music into the ‘Creative Development’ of the whole curriculum
  • Whole-class planning to include multi-sensory learning and ensure progression
  • Working with schools to identify and challenge gifted and talented musicians
  • Auditing and organisation of resources
  • Supporting learning mentors to engage pupils in learning through music
  • Assessing achievement
  • Information on initiatives such as ‘First Access’ and ‘Sing Up’, as well as working towards awards.  Emily Barden, our Leader for Singing and Projects, supports schools with their singing strategy and advises on Sing Up Award applications
  • Supporting the teaching and learning of children with special educational needs through all aspects of music.

West Sussex Music is here to help provide support and inspiration to you and your children, but why not tell us what you want?

Creative Projects

Song writing and composition workshops designed to unleash the creativity of your pupils. These can be arranged as half or whole-day sessions, or at regular times of the week over a longer period of time.

Pupils will be introduced to the skills and processes of compositional work and developing performance techniques.

These projects will culminate in a performance.

Themed Workshops with Pupils to Enhance Topic Work

Launch your learning journey with a day of music!

This could involve "whole-class workshops" tailored to meet the needs of your individual theme and setting, "whole-school singing sessions" to kick-start a new topic, or a combination of both.

Workshops During Arts Days/Weeks

We can arrange "whole-class workshops", "whole-school singing sessions", or a combination – all tailored around a theme of the day or week. With staff in attendance, this can provide valuable continued professional development.

The project will end with a whole-school celebration!

School Productions/Celebrations

Why not take the pressure off your staff by providing a specialist to support the planning and/or development of school productions, giving your performances an extra ‘shine’.

These can include:

  • Leavers' Assemblies
  • Summer Productions
  • Christmas Concerts
  • Plus Easter or Harvest Celebrations and many more.

Specialist Teachers for National Curriculum and Singing

Our specialist tutors can provide National Curriculum music teaching as well as choral sessions to support your singing strategy from Early Years through to Key Stage 3. Sessions can be delivered independently or alongside class teachers.
