Summertime sing success

As the final note is sung as part of this year’s Big Sing project, we’re celebrating every single person who has taken part.
Big Sing is one of West Sussex Music’s largest projects with 19 events taking place involving 76 schools and a huge 3,496 KS2 students aged 7-11 years old performing in 15 different host schools across the county.
This year’s project began back in April with a CPD day where teachers from all the schools involved met with Rachel Maby, West Sussex Music’s Schools Singing Leader, to explore singing warm-ups, musical games and model session plans in preparation for the Big Sing event.
Schools met at a host school to take part in their half day singing event, giving children from different schools the chance to perform with pupils from their locality.
This year’s Big Sing theme was birds and flight. As well as their own pieces, all schools were given two songs for pupils to learn prior to the event, which included two-part harmony, with additional harmonies for schools who felt ambitious!
All schools also perform their own individual song, following the same theme, resulting in an incredible mix of song choices.
All of the events, which began on Tuesday 6 May in Worthing and ended on Wednesday 9 July in Crawley, were performed incredibly well by everyone involved, a testament to the work put in.
Alison Sutton, Assistant Head for West Sussex Music said:
“These events wouldn’t be possible without our singing leaders working at the very top of their game, supporting everyone taking part and being a part of something incredible. Well done to all the pupils and schools for your hard work and continued support.”
This year’s songs included Beautiful Creatures from Disney’s Rio 2 by Hosoi and Epstein and Follow The Heron Home by ward winning Scottish folk singer, Karine Polwart, and released on her 2016 album, Scribble in Chalk.
