As the Key2Music teacher at Hawthorns First School in Durrington (Worthing) Melody Pryce was delighted to be invited with Hawthorns First School to participate in the special Centenary Edwardian Festival in June 2014.
Pupils and staff from the two year 3 classes worked hard in preparation to perform concerts in school including an Edwardian Tea Party and in the local community at New Life Church dressed in Edwardian clothes.
Melody arranged music for glockenspiels and non-tuned percussion from composers living during the Edwardian period including ‘The Swan’ from Carnival of the Animals, part of ‘Grieg’s Piano Concerto’, Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and ‘Champagne Polka’ by Strauss. The pupils had been learning classroom percussion and singing with me throughout the year advancing their musical knowledge and performance skills to give professional, exciting and enjoyable performances.
There was some lovely feedback from our audiences:
“I thought it was lovely to hear some ‘old’ songs sung by children”.
“The children looked great, all dressed up in their Edwardian outfits and the mixture of percussion and singing was very entertaining”.
“I thought it was a lovely event and one of the best events I have attended”.
