Primary conference excels

The attendees at West Sussex Music’s Primary and SEND Music Education Conference were ‘powered up’ by the time they’d spent a day being inspired at Christ’s Hospital School near to Horsham.
West Sussex Music organised and ran the Primary & SEND Music Education Conference at Christ’s Hospital School near to Horsham on Monday 30 June.
Aimed at teachers working in Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and SEND, the conference included a wide variety of workshops to learn new techniques and fire up the neurons and not just because it was the hottest day of the year!
Ben Sellers, one of the guest speakers, inspired conference goers with his insights into creative music making with iPad, technology in the classroom and much more. Ben has been instrumental in aiding music teachers with the use of iPads in the classroom when it comes to creating music. He has created a popular training scheme which is used throughout classrooms on the use of the app Garage Band and was an inspiring part of the day.
Jane Swindells, the Primary Curriculum Manager for West Sussex Music, said:
“We love to learn as much as our teachers do, and it was amazing seeing everyone coming away smiling and really fired up with enthusiasm and confidence to bring new instrumental skills and learning into the classroom.”
At the West Sussex Primary and SEND Music Education conference there was a wide selection of workshops on offer to delegates, whatever level of expertise you had.
Workshops included ‘Zero to hero’ instrumental sessions covering learning to play and teach the djembe drum, the recorder, and the ukulele as well as singing, composition and conducting workshops.
“What a wonderfully musical day, jam-packed with ideas for all children,” Rachel Coysh, music lead at Milton Mount Primary School.
The conference takes place annually and West Sussex Music is indebted to Christ’s Hospital for their generous support for this event. Details of next year’s will be announced soon, sign up to the Hub newsletter here to find out more.
