OSCAR winning Patron

Rachel Portman OBE, the internationally acclaimed OSCAR-winning composer, has been announced as the Patron of West Sussex Music. Rachel was inspired to accept the role after attending West Sussex Music’s landmark performance of her 2007 composition The Water Diviner’s Tale in March.

Best known for her film scores including EmmaChocolat and The Cider House Rules, Rachel brings a lifelong passion for music education and youth music-making to the charity, which supports thousands of children and young people across the county each year.

“I was extremely impressed by the concert in March where the youth orchestra, youth choir and school choirs performed The Water Diviner’s Tale,” she said. “The dedication and enthusiasm of the team who made it happen was very inspiring. The performance itself was wonderful, and I was moved to hear so many young people making music together so beautifully.” Rachel Portman

West Sussex Music works to ensure every child and young person has access to high-quality musical opportunities, both in and beyond the classroom, something Rachel says is increasingly vital.

“It’s so important for young people to come together to make music. There is less and less music taught in schools and WSM’s mission is vital to fill this gap,” she said.

James Underwood, Chief Executive of West Sussex Music, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Rachel Portman as Patron of West Sussex Music. Rachel’s extraordinary achievements, alongside her deep belief in the importance of music education and young people making music together, make her a hugely inspiring figure for young people, teachers and wider community.

“Having Rachel join us at this point in West Sussex Music’s journey is incredibly special, and we are excited to work together to champion opportunities for all children and young people across the county to access and enjoy music.”

As Patron, Rachel hopes to encourage more young people to discover the confidence, creativity and connection that music can bring, whether through singing, learning an instrument, performing with others or simply taking part.

Rachel’s own musical journey began in childhood after her mother recognised her musical ability and encouraged her to explore it through lessons and live performance experiences, something Rachel believes can make a lasting difference to young people today.

She also offered advice to aspiring musicians, “Find a place where you can join in with other musicians whether it’s singing or playing. Try and find other young musicians to play with and play for people.”

Rachel cites Johann Sebastian Bach as one of her greatest musical inspirations, alongside the natural world, which continues to influence her work today.
