We’re counting down to the West Sussex Primary and SEND Music Conference taking place in Haywards Heath in July and have some incredible speakers coming to inform and delight.
The conference is taking place on Thursday 9 July at Haywards Heath College and is open to all professionals working with children and young people – with those working in Sussex maintained schools (local authority or academy) entitled to free spaces.
As well as plenty of chances to network and catch up with other music teachers, there’s a variety of workshops to choose from throughout the day, all with the aim to power up music both in and out of the classroom.
Here are details about some of our inspirational speakers:
Shivani Rattan will be running workshops on Inclusive Choirs, Approaching Culture Through Song, and Refreshing Your Repertoire. Shivani is an engaging choral conductor, mezzo-soprano, and workshop leader based in London. She performs with the acclaimed all-female vocal quintet Papagena and is a sought-after session singer.
Aga Serugo-Lugo will guide you through Composing Using Rhythm and Composing Without An Instrument. Aga is a vocalist, clarinettist, pianist, composer and workshop leader. He has sung with the nine-piece funk band Gefunkt and composed for, as well as performed with, the jazz-fusion group Eclectiv.
Deen Nauthoa will bring his mastery with his Introduction To DJing In The Classroom. Deen is the founder and lead instructor at NextGen Music. Over the past 14 years, his passion for DJing has taken him to venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, giving him a wealth of experience that he is eager to share with the next generation of music enthusiasts.
Jo Eames will be leading on Integrating iPads Into Classroom Learning. Jo is a multi-instrumentalist who specialises in whole-class instrumental teaching. Jo is an experienced classroom practitioner, spending several years working as a primary teacher before joining West Sussex Music, where she quickly established a reputation as an outstanding whole-class practitioner and singing leader.
Alex Bondonno will guide you through creating An Orchestra In The Classroom. Using glockenspiels, keyboards, and other instruments commonly found in schools he will share how to include every child. Alex is the Music Lead at Handcross Primary School and at Cottesmore St Mary Primary School, both of which are Lead Music Schools within the Sussex Music Hub. He has decades of experience teaching music both in and out of the classroom.
Fiona Bull will introduce her fun and accessible approaches to rhythm, lyrics, and melody, in Build Confidence In Teaching Singing. This session will offer practical ways into learning a song that will empower even the least confident teachers. Fiona is the Music Lead at Storrington Primary School, one of Sussex Music Hub’s Lead Schools for Music, known for its outstanding singing.
The conference will culminate in an inspirational fusion of voices, an easily adaptable musical experience ready for you to share with your pupils and colleagues, and a fitting end to what promises to be a very special day.
