West Sussex Music has launched a new programme of professional development for drum kit tutors, with a focus on developing group teaching strategies.
Eleven staff from WSM recently took part in the first of three practical CPD sessions, led by Sussex-based drummer and educator Pat Garvey. The session, Developing Your Teaching Practice – A Focus Session on Group Teaching, brought together both experienced and newer tutors to share approaches, refine their practice and build confidence in delivering effective group lessons.
The training supports West Sussex Music’s commitment to widening access to instrumental learning, enabling more young people to learn through sustainable group models while maintaining a high-quality, consistent experience.
Drawing on his experience as a professional musician and educator, Pat Garvey guided tutors through practical strategies to engage and support pupils in a group setting.
Paul Smyth, Assistant Head of West Sussex Music, was at the training. He said: “Through initiatives like this, West Sussex Music continues to invest in its workforce and ensure even more young people can access inspiring music education.
“It was wonderful being part of this session, and seeing our colleagues enjoying themselves, whilst learning exciting new ways to engage more learners.”
Two further sessions are planned, building on this initial work and continuing to develop best practice across the drum kit teaching team.
