Workshop – Creative Orchestral Laboratory!

17 February 2027 @ 10:30 am - 19 February 2027 @ 6:00 pm

Creative Orchestral Laboratory! (COLAB!) brings together young musicians from across West Sussex to make brand-new music together. Whether your background is classical, jazz, rock, folk, electronic, urban or something else entirely, this is a chance to collaborate with other talented players and explore new musical ideas.

Over three intensive days you’ll work with acclaimed composer and music director Tim Steiner and a team of expert musicians. Using improvisation, experimentation, discussion, and performance, you’ll create an original live set from scratch, culminating in a public performance at the end of the project.

No two projects will be the same. The music will be shaped by the people in the room, their ideas, influences and creativity.

This is an opportunity for adventurous young musicians who enjoy taking risks, listening deeply, and helping create something that has never existed before.

About Tim Steiner:

Tim is a composer, improvisor and music director specialised in devised and collaborative music. During a 30 year career he has directed performances in over 30 countries across 5 continents working with hugely diverse groups of musicians from classical, rock, folk, jazz, world, and experimental traditions. In addition to extensive work with young musicians in the UK, highlights include a 100 orchestra of rock musicians in Portugal, a 200 piece Citizens Ensemble in Australia, and a collaboration between 5 ensembles and orchestras in Brazil.

The workshop is open to young people aged 9 – 18 who are minimum grade 3 level proficiency (or equivalent) in any instrument, including voice.

Workshop Times: 10.30am–4.30pm on day one and two, 10am–6 pm on day three (including performance to parents/carers at 5pm).

Students should bring their own lunch on all days.

In order for the course to run, we will need a minimum of 25 participants.
