Youth Big Band Course at Northbrook College

MON 04 APR 2016

Between Friday 1st and Sunday 3rd April, students from West Sussex Music took part in a bespoke Big Band course.

Twenty students between the ages of 12  to 18 came together to explore and develop their Jazz skills. Working alongside professional musicians, students developed their solo and ensemble techniques within a range of Big Band repertoire including Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich.

Sessions included Big Band rehearsals, instrumental sectionals with specialist tutors, improvisation sessions, tutor performances, Q&A sessions, studio experience and a recording session on the Sunday afternoon.

Using the state of the art facilities at Northbrook College, students were able to experience working in a professional studio environment, along with understanding the various processes involved when creating a musical recording. Students will be receiving a copy of the finished recording from the course.

Led by Strictly Come Dancing band member Jeff Leach (keyboard), students gained musical insight from specialist West Sussex Music tutors and visiting industry professionals such as Lisa Grahame (Saxophone), Pete Beachill (Trombone), David May (Percussion) and James Copus (Trumpet).

All students worked very hard, maintaining a high level of focus and professionalism throughout, resulting in three great performances. Watch out for clips of the recordings coming soon.
