Education & training

BMus (Hons.) in Music Performance (Trumpet), First Class – Royal College of Music

PGCE in Secondary Music (11-18) – University of Sussex

Skills & experience

Joe is an inspirational, highly skilled and creative teacher, who believes passionately in the vital importance of music provision, and in the primacy of performance within that. He has taught in public and state school classrooms for nearly twelve years, including three years as Head of Music at Roedean Moira House. This tenure ended with the school’s closure in August 2020.

Joe is a freelance educator and performer, balancing work as brass specialist for West Sussex Music with an extensive instrumental and academic private teaching practice. As a freelance trumpet player, he regularly appears with some of the UK’s leading ensembles, such as the London Symphony Orchestra and City of London Sinfonia, as well as in West End shows. Joe is also a singer, guitarist and bass player, and proficient playing across a range of musical styles.

Joe has considerable experience of directing and coaching diverse ensembles in a wide variety of educational settings, from beginners right through to conservatoire students, including county youth orchestra sections, orchestras, brass and wind ensembles, choirs, big bands, rock and pop groups, and whole-class ensembles.

Joe has prepared students of all ages for all levels of instrumental grade, up to diploma, for scholarship and junior conservatoire auditions, and for graded theory exams. His students achieve consistently outstanding results in their assessments, and several have gone on to study music, either at conservatoire or university.

Testimonials

Joe taught my son the trumpet for four years between the ages of 12 and 16. Not only was Joe instrumental in helping my son gain a place at Junior Royal College of Music, but he sensitively guided him through the very difficult two years when he had to wear dental braces. More importantly, Joe encouraged a love a music by enabling him to explore some wonderful repertoire as well as helping him develop a secure technique and embouchure. He gained a Grade 8 distinction whilst learning with Joe and is now studying the trumpet at the Guildhall in London. There is no doubt in my mind that Joe’s dedication, enthusiasm, sensitivity and professionalism helped my son developed his passion for the trumpet!
