Two young people will be able to access music opportunities through West Sussex Music thanks to a generous donation from The Arts Society Horsham (TASH).
The donation will fund two students through West Sussex Music’s bursary scheme which helps to remove financial barriers and ensures that more young people can take part in music-making, regardless of their circumstances.
The bursary programme supports children and young people who may otherwise be unable to access lessons, instrument loan, ensembles and other musical opportunities, enabling them to develop their skills, confidence and creativity through music.
The Arts Society Horsham, which promotes engagement with the arts through its programme of lectures, visits and community initiatives, awarded the funding after learning about the impact of West Sussex Music’s work from one of its members.
Christine Knight, Chair of The Arts Society Horsham (TASH) said:
“As well as organising our lecture and visits programme for members and guests, one of the aims of The Arts Society Horsham is to promote the arts within our community. We have some funding available, and a member who has grandchildren attending music lessons with West Sussex Music, made us aware of the bursary system and how a donation from TASH would be so welcomed.
“The committee made the decision to fund two bursaries, allowing two children to participate who otherwise would not be able to afford to do so. We are delighted with the response from West Sussex Music and, in due course, look forward to hearing of the children’s progress.”
James Underwood, Chief Executive of West Sussex Music, said:
“We are incredibly grateful to The Arts Society Horsham for their generous support. These bursaries will make a real difference to the lives of two young people, providing access to musical opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.”
He added, “At West Sussex Music, we believe every child should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of music, regardless of their financial circumstances. Partnerships like this help us ensure that talented and enthusiastic young musicians can develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy all that music has to offer.”
West Sussex Music’s bursary scheme supports children and young people from across the county, helping them to access instrumental and vocal tuition, ensembles and wider musical opportunities. Donations and community support play a vital role in ensuring that music remains accessible to all.
